Special Anecdote – 1st half of the 2011-12 EPL Season

1st half of English Premier was already concluded. From the bottom to the top of the table, surprises were not short, some exceeded the expectations, and others were a shadow of their former self.  Manchester City and Tottenham was a big surprise. QPR, Norwhich and Swansea, the three promoted side, was a revelation too.

In the current top four, Manchester City at pole position and Tottenham at 3rd were the team that astonished the league. After 36 years of being empty handed of trophy, this might be the year of Manchester City, under the guidance of Roberto Mancini. M.C.F.C had only lost once after the first half of the campaign, 1-2 against Chelsea, while made a 6-1 shocker against Manchester United, in their derby. Although both Manchester teams are in a virtual tie at 45 points, Manchester United is behind by 5 goals in goal differential.

On the third place, Tottenham was the least likely to be in the top four pack, ahead of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool; the Spurs was just lurking outside the top four in past couple of season. Harry Redknapp managed his team to win 12 of 17 games, with 38 points, 7 behind Manchester teams, in the current season. While the swift attacking of the Spurs prevailed most of the time, their defence should be strengthened more for the rest of the season if they want to retain their current place.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool were a disappointment; the three teams are placed in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively at the table. And, they struggled a lot in coping up with the form of the league leaders, as they battled mid-table teams like Stoke, New Castle and Swansea.

Norwich, Swansea and QPR, the promoted sides this season, meanwhile made a good start as they frequent the middle of the standings. However, the current month seen them to be plunging at the bottom half. Norwich and Swansea are getting most of their points playing at home, while QPR played better on away games.

At the basement dweller of the table, Wigan Athletic, Bolton and Blackburn were the teams destined to be relegated at the end of the season. However, there are 18 game-week more to fight for the spot above the relegation zone.

After 18 grueling game-weeks of the EPL, the most exciting and popular national football league continue to make a statement, competition is everywhere in the table. The league is not a two race-horse competition. And, it continues to produce drama and surprises inside every team’s pitch.
